Marston Group is providing enforcement expertise to the Haitian government following a Coordination Conference for Legal Assistance to Haiti, which took place in Paris on the 15th June.
Organised by the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC), the conference aimed to bring together various organisations that expressed an interest in contributing to rebuilding Haiti's justice system following the devastating earthquake in January.
Marston Group joined organisations such as the Ministry of Justice, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank in seeking to determine what reparative measures have already been taken, and what critical gaps could be filled.
The conference commenced with an overview of the earthquake that claimed over 200,000 lives and destroyed countless buildings in the capital of Port-au-Prince, including the Ministry of Justice.
Topics such as legal reform, training for judges and lawyers, access to justice and enforcement of Judgments were discussed. The Group Chairman, John Marston OBE, attended the conference to explain the importance of enforcing judgments. He argued that failure to enforce judgments would undermine the proposed development of Haiti's judicial system.
Commenting on the outcome of the conference, John said: "It is wonderful for Marston Group to be a part of an international movement that aims to restore law and order in a country that needs the world's support. We look forward to being a part of a positive change that will make a significant difference to the people of Haiti."
A second conference is due to take place in November in Trinidad. Marston Group and various International Aid Agencies are attending, as well as representatives of the Haitian government.
